Top 10s, gold ratings highlight Monti chapter's year

     The Monticello FFA has participated in a variety of different activities throughout the 2019-20 calendar year receiving numerous top 10 finishes and gold ratings in state events while also participating and performing local service activities.

     Members that participated at the Sub-District Career Development Events held at Anamosa on Feb. 21 were Gavin Cooper, who competed in Ag Sales and receiving silver. Lydia Recker competed in creed speaking and received silver. Jordan Lorenzen received silver in Prepared Public Speaking. Karli Recker received gold and advanced to Districts in Radio Broadcasting. The Conduct of Meetings received a silver and advanced to districts.

     At State FFA Convention Karli Recker received State Champion for Ag Radio Broadcasting. The Ag Biotech team consisting of Ian Lorenzen, Jasper Nietert, Emalee Manternach, and Jaydon Orcutt finished as the ninth place overall team.

     Farm Business Management team consisting of Adam Schmitt, Michael Blunt (13th individually), and Rachel Nelson received gold and 13th place as a team overall.

     In Ag Communications, Jordan Lorenzen, Chloe Gray, Marissa Recker, and Karli Recker received fourth overall. Owen Thomas and Ty Jesenovec participated in the Greenhand Quiz. Joseph Schrader participated with the walking of the flags, and Adele Hogan participated in the State Chorus.

     Dane Thomas received his Iowa FFA Degree in April and Garrett Nietert received his American FFA Degree in October at the National FFA Convention.

     At district CDE’s we had three teams participate. Our Ag Mechanics team brought home 6th place thanks to Bo Kramer, Luke Price, Kaden Kiburz, and Mikey Russell. The Nursery Landscape team with Owen Thomas (third individually), Tom Dirks, and Joseph Schrader received fourth as a team. Our Floriculture team of Marissa Recker (third individually), Jordan Lorenzen (sixth) along with Rachel Nelson, received second as a team overall. Our Food Science team consisted of Joseph Schrader, Kadence Barnhart, and Emalee Manternach receiving seventh as a team overall.

     In June the Horse Judging team received fourth place overall with Rachel Nelson, Gracie Henderson, Brooklyn Stark, and Gabrielle Steiner (6th individually).

     At the Iowa State Fair, many members exhibited their animals during the fair. Marissa Recker showed her Simmental Heifer. Lydia Recker showed her Angus Heifer receiving second place. Kacie Rickels showed her Maine-Angus Heifer and received Champion. Caleb Hogan showed his Simmental Cow/Calf and received Reserved Champion Simmental Cow/Calf overall. Karli Recker showed her Sheep and received blue ribbons. DeLainy Fellinger showed her Hampshire Breeding Gilt and received Champion. Garrett and Jasper Nietert, and Brooklyn Steiner participated in the Horse Show. Ashlynn Sparks received many ribbons including first place, purple in Winter Yearling Brown Swiss cow and eighth place in Senior Showmanship in the Dairy Show.

     On Oct. 13, our chapter held our second annual Feed the Farmers event where we delivered 105 meals to farmers working in the field while in December the chapter prepared 20 fruit baskets to donate to the food pantry.

     November 12th, our FFA Chapter held our annual Fall Festival. Many members participated in the Hay and Grain Show. The top five overall consisted of Adam Schmitt (fifth place), Kaden Kiburz (fourth), Karli Recker (third), Adele Hogan (second), and Luke Price (first).
