Tournament and league play continue for Cubs
The Monticello Cubs had some ups and downs, in tournament play and otherwise, during a two-week stretch that included five semi-pro baseball games.
The highlight for the Cubs was a 9-0 victory over Holy Cross in the first round of the Cascade Tournament July 3. The other four were losses: 3-1 to Rickardsville in the Worthington Tournament quarterfinals June 27, a 9-1 loss at Dyersville June 30, a 16-0 home loss to Dubuque July 6, and a 7-0 loss to Cascade in the Cascade Tournament quarterfinals July 9.
Monticello came out of those games 1-7 in Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League (EIHL) play, 4-11 overall.
In the Worthington Tournament game, Rickardsville scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Monticello tallied in the top of the seventh, when Michael Reuter hit an RBI single, scoring Ben Stutt. Monticello had six hits, and left the bases loaded twice.
Mason Newhard pitched the first three innings, and A.J. Reuter worked the last three.
“We couldn’t get runs when we had opportunities,” Monticello player-manager Garett Hanken said. “Mason settled in nicely after the first inning, and A.J. closed it out well.”
On June 30, the Cubs played an EIHL game at Dyersville, and lost 9-1. Monticello trailed 4-1 through four innings, but allowed three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Mitch Monk pitched the first five innings, and Kyle Huxford finished the game.
“Mitch kept us in it through the first few innings, but we couldn’t keep up offensively,” Hanken said.
Monticello had four hits.
Then came the win over Holy Cross, in which A.J. Reuter fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts over five innings. Tanner Felton was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. A.J. Reuter batted 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Zach Monk was 1-for-2.
“A.J. was as dominant as he has been all year,” Hanken said. “Tanner had a nice game at the plate, and Zach continued to swing the bat well.”
A four-run fourth inning broke open a 4-0 game for the Cubs.
Then came the home EIHL game against Dubuque on July 6. The visitors scored 10 runs over the first three innings to take control early.
“This one was ugly, early and often,” Hanken said. “They could do no wrong at the plate.”
Three days later, the Cubs continued play in the Cascade Tournament, but lost to the host team 7-0. Cascade scored five runs over the first three innings. Monticello was held to two hits.
“We won’t win many games against good teams with two hits,” Hanken said. “We’ll regroup and focus on the Rickardsville and Dyersville tournaments.”
The Cubs will play host to Holy Cross July 14 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, July 16, they will face New Vienna in the first round of the Rickardsville Tournament.
