Tree Board offers ‘Big Tree Contest’

The City of Monticello Tree Board is hosting a “Big Tree Contest.”

Citizens of Monticello are asked to help identify the largest trees within city limits. Each species of tree will be judged in a separate category. For example, a Silver Maple will only compete against other Silver Maple trees. (Don’t worry. Tree Board members will help identify the trees and confirm their measurements.)

Trees should be measured in inches at approximately 4 ½ feet from the ground.

The “Big Tree Contest” starts Monday, March 12 and ends Tuesday, May 1.

Contest entries can be dropped off at City Hall. You will need to include your name, where the tree is located, and the date of the report. Measurements will be re-measured if the tree is found to be competing with another tree close to its size.

Once the trees have been confirmed, the full list will be published in The Monticello Express. Prizes are bragging rights and a photo in the Express, along with a certificate from the Tree Board.

When measuring trees, please respect private property. Landowners are not required to allow others onto their property.

However, many public places have trees such as city parks, school grounds, along the Maquoketa River, and city right of way, just to name a few.

In addition to the “Big Tree Contest,” the Tree Board wants to also find out the largest tree in Monticello, the largest stump, the gnarliest tree, and the most perfectly shaped tree.
