The highlight of a four-meet week for the Monticello High School girls track and field team was the participation of two relay teams in the prestigious Drake Relays.

Monticello sent its 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams to Des Moines, with the former competing on a chilly Friday evening, April 27, and the latter running Saturday morning.

The 4x100 team placed 41st out of 80 qualifying teams. Gabrielle Guilford, Maddie Lambert, Kaylee Stephen and Anna Loes finished in 51.61 seconds.

“They 4x100 team ran pretty well on a windy Friday and managed to knock almost half a second off their season’s best time,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said. “We worked on some footwork things last week, and it seems to be paying off.”

The 4x800 team of Taylor McDonald, Gabrielle Steiner, Jordyn Patterson and Paige Holub was 15th in 9:56.86.

“They didn’t run their best time of the season, but they did go out and compete hard,” the coach said.

The rest of the team had a hectic week, with three meets in four days. That started with the Stormin’ Pointer Invitational April 23 at Center Point-Urbana, where Monticello was fourth with 42 points. Holub won the 1,500 in 4:58.46. The shuttle hurdle team Maria Recker, Stephen, Macy McDonough and Guilford ran a season-best 1:09.62 to finish second.

“Paige won in the last 40 meters of the race, passing two other competitors and running her season-best time,” Reade said. “Lauren Bader had a breakthrough night with her times.”

On April 24, Monticello was third out of 12 teams in the Anamosa Co-ed meet. Winners included Holub in the 1,500, and the 4x100 and distance medley relay teams.

“The distance medley ran a season’s best,” Reade said. “Gabby Guilford continues to impress.”

Competing without the Drake qualifiers April 26 at Marion, Monticello finished 10th with 11 points.

“We were really impressed with Tori McDonald for volunteering to try the 400 hurdles,” the coach said. “Also, Karli Recker and Maddie Stadtmueller ran their best times of the season in the 1500. Payton Jaeger had a monster PR in the shot put, by almost two feet. Megan Mahoney had another PR in the shot as well.”
