United Church to present organ recital

The United Church of Monticello, 123 N. Chestnut St., will present an organ recital on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3:00 p.m., featuring its Barckhoff organ built in 1904.  While that may sound like an instrument that is too old to take seriously, many organs four and even five hundred years old are still in regular use today.  People from all over the world travel to perform on them.  The Barckhoff organ is built according to the same principles that enable organs to last for centuries.  This recital is presented as part of an effort to increase community awareness of this fine instrument with hopes to begin a project of raising funds to properly restore the instrument.  Faithfully maintained, this organ could serve the Monticello community and beyond for centuries.

The recital will be performed by Pastor Paul Finger of SS. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church.  Paul completed his undergraduate work in music at University of Wisconsin, and his masters at the University of Iowa, both in organ performance.  Paul had extensive experience in church music prior to becoming a pastor.

The program will consist of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Merulo, Felix Mendelssohn, Paul Hindemith, Louis Vierne, and Marcel Dupré.  A freewill offering will be received for expenses related to the organ.
