VITA offering limited in-person tax services

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), a program run by the Jones County Volunteer Center, took 2020 off due to the pandemic. Now, they are offering limited in-person appointments for those seeking tax appointments.

Appointments can be made on Tuesday evenings and one Saturday a month in both February and March. They are also offering drop-off appointments on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings.

“All tax preps will require an appointment,” said Amy Kelter, Volunteer Center coordinator. “There will be no walk-in services this year.”

While inside the building, facemasks will be required.

“We are asking anyone who feels ill the day of their appointment, or has recently been exposed to COVID-19, to reschedule,” urged Kelter. “We are taking extra precautions this year with sanitation.”

Those interested in setting up a VITA appointment can do so online at www.uweci.org/vita2021. Click on the Jones County Volunteer Center option. You can also call the Volunteer Center at 319-560-0811. Leave a voicemail if the phone is not answered.

Keltner shared that on an annual basis, the VITA program serves anywhere from 160 to 200 individuals.

“This program is designed by the IRS to provide specific training to community volunteers in order to provide free tax assistance to low-income households in our area,” she explained.

Those with an annual income of $54,000 or less in a year are eligible.

VITA will run from Feb. 16 through April 6.

The Volunteer Center is located at 105 Broadway Place, Ste. 1 in Anamosa.
