Volunteer Center offers free VITA program

The Jones County Volunteer Center is again offering the free VITA program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. 

In 2019, VITA volunteers assisted more than 2,235 individuals and families in preparation of their federal and state income taxes. Through this free service, the VITA program returned more than $3.8 million to our community and an average of $1,818 to these individuals and families. 

Onsite, Personal Assistance 

Meet with an IRS-certified VITA tax assistant for one hour at a VITA site to complete your federal and state income tax returns. 

Simplified Process 

The VITA personnel will assist in making a sometimes complex and complicated tax preparation process a more trouble-free experience for you. Simply schedule your appointment, bring the necessary and required documentation, complete an intake form, and sit with the volunteer to complete your tax return.

What to Bring 

• Proper identification, including photo ID and Social Security card, for all individuals who will be included on your tax returns 

• All wage and income documents 

• Last year’s tax returns 

• Any college expenses and scholarships 

• Bank routing information 

• Additional items you will need will be identified when your appointment is scheduled 

The Jones County Volunteer Center will see clients on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Wednesday mornings starting Feb. 4. They will also have two Saturdays open on Feb. 29 and March 14.
