Volunteers needed for Monticello Thanksgiving Community Dinner

Letter to the Editor

To the friends and neighbors,

When the leaves start to change their colors and fall to the ground, and when the pigskin is flying through the air… it can only mean one thing. Thanksgiving is not too far away.

This is one of our favorite holidays because it is centered on family and community and the only gift you give is yourself. With that in mind, Terry and I will once again be heading this year’s team to support the Thanksgiving Community Dinner in Monticello.

This year’s event will be on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, in the Berndes Center at the fairgrounds in Monticello. Once again there will be three ways to enjoy a complimentary meal:

• You can come and dine with us, our family-style service starts at noon (please arrive at 11:30 a.m.)

• You can have a meal delivered (within the Monticello area)

• You can come and pick up a meal to take home (please arrive by 11:15 a.m.)

Regardless of which way you would prefer to partake in a meal, please give us a call at 319-465-3219 and leave us a message and we will get back to you.

As in year’s past, we cannot do this on our own, and we look forward to working with all of you to make this a success. We truly appreciate and thank you for your time and efforts. There are many ways to volunteer, such as:

• Greeters/general – greet people as they arrive, seat them at the tables, help with food prep, help with food serving, general overall help. (Volunteers to arrive by 10:30 a.m.)

• Delivering meals – we would like six to seven delivery teams. Arrive by 11 a.m. and are done when deliveries are completed (bring boxes to help hold the meals). We would like to have all the delivery drivers start their deliveries by 11:30 a.m.

• Table servers – we would like 10 teams to support the people dining-in (volunteers arrive by 10:30 a.m. to support food preparation, delivery meal gathering, and serving tables).

• Food preparation/serving – we would like 10 to 15 people to help prepare the food on Thanksgiving morning (cranberry cups, vegetable cutting/bagging, ranch cups, roll/butter bagging). Arrive by 10 a.m.

• Kitchen – running the dishwasher, scrubbing roasters, drying the dishes (two people, arrive by 11 a.m.).

• Tear down/cleanup – once the deliveries have been sent out, the take-out meals have been provided, and we start serving the people dining in, we can start the teardown with cleanup lasting into the early afternoon.

If you would like to volunteer your time, please give us a call at 319-465-3219 and leave us a message as to which area you would like to support and we will get back to you.

Any monetary donations would also be appreciated, and they can be sent to Terry Feuling (c/o TCD), 15736 120th Ave., Scotch Grove, IA 52310, or there will be donation locations in Monticello at Citizens State Bank and Monti Barber. All money received in excess of what is needed for the meal will be donated to the Monticello Food Bank.

We are also looking for dessert pies (pumpkin, apple, cherry, peach) to be delivered to the Berndes Center on Thanksgiving morning. Please call and let us know if you plan on bringing a pie and which flavor you plan on making.

With warm holiday wishes,

Bruce and Terry Feuling
