Walkoff victory wraps up season for Monti Cubs
Monticello clouted three home runs, including a walkoff grand slam by Roamn Hummel in the bottom of the ninth inning, to end its semi-pro baseball season with a 9-6 win over Placid Sunday, Aug. 19.
The win came in the consolation round of the Placid Tournament.
The Cubs trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, before Garett Hanken and Zach Monk singled with one out, Tanner Felton walked, and Hummel delivered his game-winning homer.
A.J. Reuter hit a two-run homer earlier in the game, and Tyler Felton had a solo shot. The Cubs had 12 hits in all; Hummel and A.J. Reuter were both 3-for-4, and Tyler Felton was 2-for-4.
Tyler Felton pitched 7 2/3 innings in relief of starter A.J. Reuter, and picked up the win.
“It was good to end the year with a win, and even better to win with a walkoff,” said Hanken, the Cubs’ player/manager. “Tyler seemed to get better as the game went on. A.J., Tanner and Roamn really carried us offensively.”
The Cubs had two previous games last week. On Aug. 13, they suffered a 3-1 loss to Peosta in the quarterfinals of the Peosta Tournament. Monticello was held to three hits; Jacob Thompson was 2-for-3 with two doubles. A.J. Reuter pitched six innings and took the loss, allowing four hits and striking out seven.
“This was a disappointing loss, but A.J. threw a heck of a game,” Hanken said. “We couldn’t get anything going offensively. Jacob Thompson hit the ball well.”
Then, Monticello opened the Placid Tournament with a 20-3 loss to Holy Cross. A Cubs highlight there was a three-run homer by Lucas Stutt.
“We were shorthanded, they were not, and it didn’t go well,” Hanken said.
The Cubs finished the season with an 11-20 record, including 3-12 in the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League.
“We didn’t win as many games this year as we would have liked, but it was a good season,” Hanken said. “Hopefully we’ll return our usual players and add some of the younger guys full-time next season.”
