The weather was significantly better, and the Monticello High School cross country teams took advantage of that during the Bob Brown Invitational Thursday, Aug. 30 at Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City.

“The times were great,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said.

Indeed, nearly every runner who had established an earlier time ran a season-best during the low-70s, low humidity event –  a far cry from the muggy and muddy conditions that greeted runners at Cedar Rapids Prairie five days earlier.

Both Monticello varsity teams finished seventh in their respective races against competition that included several ranked and higher-class opponents.

“We’d like to finish higher, but we’re improving,” Sauser said. “We need to continue running the way we have been.”

The Panther boys were led by Jasper Nietert, who was 16th overall in 18:27.93. He was followed by Cole Cruise, Zach Chapman, Daltyn Kramer and David Titman among Panthers who figured into the team score.

“The boys had another really good race,” the coach said. “The boys’ field was really loaded; there were seven or eight ranked teams there.

“Jasper’s been running at a really high level. I’ve been really pleased with the development of Jasper and Zach (Chapman).”

Levi Temple recorded a personal record time for the Panthers.

Karle Kramer led the Monticello girls by finishing 21st in 22:47.26, followed closely by Gabrielle Steiner, 22nd in 22:51.16. Lydia Recker was 29th and Emily Schlarmann 48th.

“We’ve been pretty good, one through four,” Sauser said. “We’re waiting for a number five runner to step up.

“Karle Kramer had a great race. For her second high school race, she looks pretty good out there.”

In the JV races, the Monticello boys were eighth, led by Gavin Baugh, who was 14th individually. The girls had four runners – not enough for a complete team – and were led by Maddie Stadtmueller, who was 25th in that race.

“We’re a young team, and we’re looking for growth,” Sauser said. “We’re developing in the right direction.”

Monticello Invitational next

The Panthers will host their annual Monticello Invitational at the high school Saturday, Sept. 8.

Race times are 8:10 a.m. for middle school girls, 8:35 a.m. for middle school boys, 9 a.m. for JV girls, 9:30 a.m. for JV boys, 10 a.m. for varsity girls, and 10:30 a.m. for varsity boys.
