CONSERVATION CONVERSATION

The Jones Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) commissioners have hired Stacey Weets to serve as a summer Conservation Intern.

Stacey will be working out of the USDA Service Center in Anamosa, helping to implement soil and water conservation practices throughout Jones and surrounding counties. Her internship consists of 480 hours, part of which will be assisting other local SWCD employees as well as partner agency employees, including federal staff of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and state staff of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship – Division of Soil Conservation & Water Quality.

Stacey is majoring in agricultural and resource economics at South Dakota State University and will be starting her third year this fall. With a strong background in economics, she hopes to be able to understand the ways in which programs are funded through USDA and what conservation and soil health practices are available for producers to implement. Growing up on her family’s farm outside of Mechanicsville has given her a great appreciation for the land and an understanding of the effect conservation and preservation has on our natural resources.

This summer, Stacey is excited to be getting out in the field with SWCD employees to see the concerns people are facing and different ways to address them. She will get opportunities to work with landowners and renters to complete projects and solve conflicts affecting their farming operation or recreational activities. In this internship she plans to learn more about conservation agency programs offered, how they work with local community members, and the benefits to the community. Stacey will also be heavily involved in this year’s cover crops initiative.

To meet Stacey, or for more information about cover crops or installing practices to aid in soil and water conservation, stop by our office in the USDA Service Center at 300 Chamber Drive in Anamosa, visit us at www.jonesswcd.org, or give us a call at 319-462-3196, ext. 3.
