October is National Principals Month. The Monticello Community School District and Sacred Heart Catholic School are fortunate to have four principals proudly serving the families and students of this community. For the next several weeks, the Express will spotlight each principal, thanking them for their dedication.

Monticello Middle School Principal Todd Werner started working for the MCSD at the start of the 2020-21 school year. He began his new job just as the new middle school opened its doors to students and staff on the first day of school, Aug. 24.

This is Werner’s 12th serving as a principal; his 27th year in education overall.

“I’ve been so impressed about the dedication and commitment of the staff at Monticello,” praised Werner of working for the MCSD. “I’ve also enjoyed seeing the support the schools receive from the community.”

In his role, Werner enjoys working with the students (grades 5-8), the teachers, and families of the Monticello School District.

“Every day is different and I really enjoy the relationships that are built within a school system,” he said.

In his free time, Werner spends time with his family, golfing, hunting, working on home projects, and following and supporting his kids’ activities.

Werner and his wife, Paula, have three children: Colin, 16; Brent, 14; and Kendall, 12.

Something unique about Werner is the fact that he and his wife have traveled to nearly all of the Big Ten football stadiums; some more than once.

“We’re missing Nebraska, Rutgers, and Maryland,” Werner shared. “Our favorite is Michigan, where we’re been three times.”

Werner said he is “very excited to be here at Monticello, and am looking forward to many great things to come in the future.”
