West Liberty edges Monticello in bitter conditions

GIRLS SOCCER

Monticello battled cold, windy conditions, and a stingy West Liberty team, in a 2-0 girls soccer defeat May 9 at West Liberty.

The Panthers (1-7) played West Liberty to a scoreless tie in the first half, but the Comets scored five minutes into the second half, and again with about 16 minutes to play, to secure the win.

“Both teams had scoring opportunities, and the defenses stepped up to shut them down,” Monticello coach Bruce Feuling said.

The Panthers shared goalkeeping duties. Lydia Lange played the first 30 minutes of the match and had one save. Hannah Ahlrichs played the final 10 minutes of the first half and the entire second half, making nine saves.

Offensively, Rylee Bauer and Evee Krouse each had a shot attempt in the match.

Monticello opened the event with a junior varsity match against West Liberty, with the teams playing to a 0-0 tie.

“Both teams were evenly matched with scoring opportunities that were turned away by excellent goalie play,” Feuling said.

Ahlrichs was the Monticello goalkeeper, recording a shutout.
