“What a ride they took us on.”

With that, Monticello boys basketball coach Tim Lambert summed up the 2021-22 season during the team’s awards event April 30 in the Monticello High School Commons.

The Panthers qualified for the State Boys Basketball Tournament for the third straight year, reaching the Class 2A semifinals before falling to eventual champion Rock Valley.

The team also won the River Valley Conference North Division title for the third consecutive year, with a 17-2 record, and went 22-4 overall.

“Nobody picked us as a team to watch, nobody thought we would win the conference, but we believed it,” Lambert said.

The Panthers were successful in other ways. Academically, the team had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.7. Also, the junior varsity team went 12-8.
