It was a four-meet week for the Maquoketa Valley High School wrestling team last week.

First, the Wildcats competed in a double dual meet at Bellevue Jan. 8, which also included Starmont. Maquoketa Valley defeated both opponents, 42-24 over Starmont and 54-24 over Bellevue.

Robert Hildebrand won both of his matches by fall at 152 pounds. Others who recorded pins during the meet included Carter Kruse, Dylan Happel, Tim Harmon and Chance Downs. Mitch Smith and Evan Elgin scored decision victories.

MV was back in action the next night as well, with a home double dual meet. The Wildcats defeated Anamosa 51-24, and topped Monticello 45-36. Elgin won both of his matches by fall, and Smith won by fall and a decision. Other recording pins were Chance Kemp, Robert Hildebrand, Carter Stahlberg and Downs.

“I was very happy with the way we came out and performed,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said. “We had a bunch of guys step up and wrestle up in different weight classes to fill out a lineup.”

The Wildcats then had a meet Jan. 12 at Lisbon, beating Midland 57-24, losing to Lisbon 63-18, and beating North Linn 45-35. Hildebrand went 2-1 with a pin and a decision. Others scoring pins were Michael Feldmann, Dylan Lane, Elgin, Happel and Smith.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Wildcats competed in the Cascade Invitational, and finished 11th with 66 points. Western Dubuque was the team champion with 191.

Downs was third at 145 pounds. Hildebrand took fourth at 152, and Smith was fourth at 160. Feldmann was fifth at 195, and Harmon placed sixth at 138.

“Anytime you have to go back-to-back, especially being out late on a Friday night and having to get up early for an all-day tournament, it’s tough,” Andrews said. “Our guys did not make excuses and came out fighting on Saturday in a very tough field.”
