Wildcats head into tourney on four-match win streak

Volleyball

     Maquoketa Valley extended its winning streak to four, closing out its regular season of volleyball with a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference wins last week.

     The Wildcats (4-2, 11-9) played host to Alburnett and scored a four-set victory, losing the first set 24-26, but winning the next three 25-16, 25-17, 25-22. Emerson Whittenbauch led the team with 19 kills and served 20-for-20. Maci Freiburger had 13 kills, while Olivia Hoeger and Brooke Wilson had nine apiece. Ella Imler had a team-high 34 digs, while Freiburger had 20, Whittenbaugh had 18, and Maddy Anderegg had 15. Lydia Helle had four blocks, and Hoeger had three.

     On Oct. 4, MV traveled to Central City and swept their hosts 25-13, 25-18, 25-26. Anderegg made 27 assists in the match, as Whittenbaugh had 17 kills and Freiburger had 11. Imler and Freiburger had 16 kills apiece, and Whittenbaugh had 12. Freiburger served three aces; Anderegg, Helle and Whittenbaugh served two apiece. Helle also had two blocks.

     Maquoketa Valley was scheduled to compete in the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament Oct. 11 and 13.

 

Football

     A long touchdown pass in the middle of the fourth quarter was the difference, as the Maquoketa Valley football team suffered a 26-21 loss at MFL MarMac Sept. 28.

     The loss overshadowed a strong running game for the Wildcats (0-2, 0-5), who racked up 229 rushing yards. Derek Becker led that charge with 122 yards on 19 carries. James Legassick carried three times for 76 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown run.

     Norman Wilson completed eight of 17 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for one score. Matthew Hucker caught the touchdown pass, on a six-yard play, while accumulating 46 receiving yards.

     Legassick recovered an MFL MarMac fumble. Michael Feldmann had 6.5 tackles, while Hucker had six.

 

Cross country

     Maquoketa Valley finished eighth out of 19 schools in the varsity boys’ race at the Lynx Invitational Oct. 6 at North Linn in Troy Mills.

     The Wildcats totaled 237 points. Clear Creek-Amana was the winner with 39, Marion took second place with 76, and Tipton was third with 102.

     Chance Downs was 17th overall for the Wildcats, with a time of 17 minutes, 59.0 seconds. Mason Lubben ran 45th, Ethan Doyl was 51st, Derek Mensen took 58th, and Nolan Ries was 74th to round out the scoring. Jon Seibert had a 79th place finish.
