Wildcats, McShane throttle Starmont

Football

   Lance McShane rushed for 235 yards on 35 carries, and a big second quarter boosted the Maquoketa Valley football team to a 38-24 victory Oct. 7 at Starmont, lifting the Wildcats to 4-1 in Class A, District 4 play, and 5-2 overall. MV outscored the Stars 18-0 in the period to take a 30-12 halftime lead, and held on the rest of the way.

   McShane scored four touchdowns for the Wildcats, two no the ground, one on a pass from T.J. Cook, and another on a 43-yard interception return. Cook also ran for a score. for another, to McShane.

   Defensively, Brady Wall, Aidan Salow and McShane each had 4.5 tackles. Salow had 1.5 sacks, and 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Nathan Beitz recovered a Starmont fumble.

 

Cross country

   Maquoketa Valley finished the regular portion of its cross country season with two meets last week.

   At West Delaware, the Wildcats finished 15th out of 23 teams in the boys’ race.

   Matthew Schaul ran 24th in 17:22, George Livingston was 46th in 17:57, Arion Rave took 79th in 18:37, Toby Grimm was 127th in 20:01, Brady Eike placed 146th in 20:50, and Kenyon Baker was 148th in 20:56.

   The Wildcats had two runners in the girls’ race. Taryn Burbridge was 14th overall in 20:35, and Isabel Imler placed 88th in 23:34.

   “We performed quite well,” Maquoketa Valley coach Pat Meehan said. “The improvements in performances are coming at the right time.”

   MV then competed in the North Linn Invitational Oct. 8 in Troy Mills. The boys finished 12th, led by medalist Matthew Schaul, who was 20th individually in 17:05. George Livingston ran 43rd in 17:57, Arion Rave was 58th in 18:31, Toby Grimm took 84th in 19:44, Kenyon Baker was 92nd in 20:14, and Brady Eike was 94th in 20:30.

   In the girls’ race, Taryn Burbridge medaled with a 14th place finish in 20:27. Isabel Imler finished 57th in 22:22.

   “It was a successful meet in that most athletes ran their best times of the year or close to them,” Meehan said.

  

Volleyball

   Maquoketa Valley split a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference volleyball matches as its regular season came to a close last week.

   At East Buchanan Oct. 4, the Wildcats (7-17) lost in four sets, winning the first one 25-17 but then falling 24-26, 13-25, 20-25. MV had 28 kills, led by Haley Ronnebaum with 10 and Grace Richter with seven. Keira Leytem had 16 assists, and Richter served two aces. Defensively, Lili Bauers had 18 digs, and Bianka Ronnebaum had 11. Alexis Halverson and Haley Ronnebaum had three blocks apiece.

   On Oct. 6, MV played host to Alburnett and won in four sets, 22-25, 25-5, 25-15, 25-21. Kennedy Rausch had 37 assists, as the ‘Cats had 51 kills, led by Lanni Beaman and Richter with 13 apiece, and Haley Ronnebaum with nine. Bauers had a team-high 20 digs. Leah Reicher made four blocks, and Haley Ronnebaum had three.
