Wildcats open with two wins

GIRLS BASKETBALL

     Maquoketa Valley got off to a strong start, as the girls basketball season began with the Wildcats scoring two victories.

     MV (2-0) opened with a 60-19 rout at Edgewood-Colesburg Nov. 26, and then scored a 48-37 victory over Sumner-Fredericksburg in a Rivalry Saturday game Nov. 30 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

     Against Ed-Co, the Wildcats soared to a 42-11 lead by halftime. Trista Elgin came off the bench to lead MV in scoring with 17 points. Ella Imler added 14 points, and Taya Tucker had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Kylie Chesnut and Imler had seven rebounds apiece. Imler also had six assists and five steals; Tucker had six steals.              

     A fast start was key to the win over Sumner-Fredericksburg as well, as the Wildcats took a 15-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Imler and Tucker scored 19 points apiece, with Imler grabbing eight rebounds and making four assists. Tucker had five steals. Carissa Sabers had five points, four rebounds and four steals. Caelyn Sands blocked two shots.
