Wildcats pick up two more victories

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley added a pair of wins to its record in recent Tri-Rivers Conference girls basketball action.

     The Wildcats (8-1, 13-1) traveled to Alburnett and pulled out a 31-27 victory Jan. 16, rallying from a 15-8 halftime deficit. Taya Tucker had 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals for MV, while Brooke Elgin added seven points and eight rebounds. Ella Imler had six points, four rbounds and three assists. Carissa Sabers had three points and three steals.

     Then, Imler scored 25 points in the Wildcats’ 65-39 home win over Edgewood-Colesburg Jan. 21. Imler shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 6-for-8 from three-point range, and added five assists, four rebounds and three steals to her numbers.

     Tucker scored 10 points and made eight steals. Trista Elgin had nine points. Carissa Sabers made nine steals, and Brooke Elgin had four.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley played host to Edgewood-Colesburg Jan. 21, and scored a 63-53 win, outscoring the Vikings 40-31 in the second half. Four Wildcats scored in double figures: Andrew Holtz with 16 points, Avery Holtz with 14, Owen Mensen and A.J. Ambundo with 13 apiece. Ambundo also had six rebounds. Avery Holtz made seven assists for MV (4-2, 7-6).

    

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley wrestled in a double dual meet at East Buchanan, and lost 60-15 to East Buchanan and 81-0 to Lisbon.

     Michael Schaul, at 138 pounds, had a decision victory in the East Buchanan match. Getting forfeit wins were Evan Elgin and Carter Kruse.

     On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Wildcats competed in the Louisa-Muscatine Invitational in Letts, and scored 41 points to finish in 10th place.

     Tim Harmon was champion at 170 pounds, receiving a bye and then winning by a fall and a decision. Kruse was fourth at 195 pounds, and Schaul placed fifth at 138.
