Wildcats roll in season opener

GIRLS BASKETBALL

     Maquoketa Valley opened the 2016-17 girls basketball season in about the most impressive way possible; shutting its opponent out in the first quarter.

     The Wildcats (1-0) rolled up a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, on their way to a 61-10 romp over Prince of Peace Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Clinton.

     By halftime, Maquoketa Valley held a 44-3 lead, and then outscored Prince of Peace 17-7 over the second half.

     Sam Wall had a big opening game, scoring 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field. Brianna Mensen had nine point and seven of the team’s 15 assists. Gracie Gellersen had seven points, while Caitlin Schuman and Olivia Hoeger scored five apiece.

     The team had 40 total rebounds, with eight Wildcats getting at least three apiece. They included Mensen with six, Payton Ries, Abby Holtz, Maci Freiburger and Gellersen with four apiece; and Brooke Wilson, Lydia Helle and Schuman with three each.

     Schuman led the team in steals with seven, Mensen had five, Wall had four and Olivia Hoeger had three.
