Maquoketa Valley will be represented at the State Wrestling Tournament by two wrestlers, as a result of the Class 1A district tournament Saturday, Feb. 10 in Jesup.

Parker Sternhagen (22-4) finished second at 120 pounds, and Chance Downs (40-11) was second at 145.

Both will compete at the state meet Thursday, Feb. 15 in the 6 p.m. session at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Five other Wildcats competed at the district tournament but were unable to advance. Placing third were Robert Hildebrand at 152, and Mitch Smith at 160. In fourth were Carson Wright at 195, Cole Kruse at 220 and Michael Feldmann at 285.

“To have two qualifiers come out of such a tough district is a good accomplishment,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said. “Although we wanted more, and some guys came up short of their goals, it helped watching Parker and Chance achieve their goals, and now they can represent the rest of the team the best way they can.”

MV also competed in the quarterfinal round of the team regional duals Feb. 6 at Denver, and lost to Wapsie Valley 36-31. Tim Harmon won a major decision, Sternhagen won a decision, and four other Wildcats won by forfeit.
