Wildcats stay perfect at 19-0

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley kept its unblemished girls basketball record intact with a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference wins last week.

     MV (13-0, 19-0) scored a 57-40 home victory over Central City Feb. 1, as Ella Imler scored 24 points. Emerson Whittenbaugh added 13 points. Taya Tucker had nine points and 11 rebounds.

   The next evening, Maquoketa Valley rolled to a 69-6 win over Starmont. The Wildcats outscored Starmont 26-0 in the first quarter, and led 47-2 at halftime. Whittenbaugh scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win. Carissa Sabers had 12 points, Kennedy Rausch and Imler scored nine apiece, and Tucker had eight. Imler made six assists, and Rausch had five. Tucker had five steals.

 

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley advanced two wrestlers to district competition as a result of the Class 1A sectional tournament Feb. 6 in Cascade.

     They included Carter Kruse, runner-up at 182 pounds; and Brady Davis, runner-up at 220. Both reached the finals in their respective weight classes, lost, but did not have to wrestle back for the true second spot.

     The Wildcats had four third place finishers: Michael Schaul at 145, Aiden Salow at 160, Tim Harmon at 195, and Devin Smith at 285. Tyreese Crippen was fourth at 132.

     As a team, the Wildcats finished sixth with 102 points. Dyersville Beckman was sectional champion with 206.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley pulled above the .500 mark in boys basketball with a pair of back-to-back wins last week.

     The Wildcats (7-5, 10-9) started the week with back-to-back home wins, beating Central City 62-32 Feb. 1, and downing Starmont 58-31 Feb. 2.

     Three MV players scored in double figures against Central City. A.J. Ambundo had 16 points, Avery Holtz had 13, and Jacorrey Wallace had 11. Andrew Holtz added eight points and six assists. Mitch Heims came off the bench to collect five points and five rebounds.

     Andrew Holtz scored 20 points in the Starmont game, shooting 8-for-13 from the field (61.5 percent). He also had four assists. Avery Holtz had 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Owen Mensen scored six points. Wallace had five rebounds.
