Wildcats surge into postseason

Girls basketball

     Undefeated Maquoketa Valley had just one girls basketball game last week, a 52-33 home win over Springville in which Ella Imler scored 26 points. Another key to the victory was outscoring the Orioles 20-2 in the second quarter.

     “I was very pleased with our kids and how they executed in this game,” MV coach Scot Moenck said. “I really felt we moved the ball well offensively in the first half.”

     Emerson Whittenbaugh had 15 points, eight steals, six assists and six rebounds.

     The Wildcats head into the postseason at 20-0, including 14-0 and a Tri-Rivers Conference West Division championship.

 

Wrestling

     Maquoketa Valley had two wrestlers compete in the Class 1A district wrestling meet Feb. 13 in Denver.

     Carter Kruse wrestled at 182 pounds, and Brady Davis wrestled at 220. Both finished fourth, as the Wildcats’ season came to an end.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley ended its regular season of boys basketball with a pair of home losses. The first was to Edgewood-Colesburg Feb. 9, by a score of 59-35. Ed-Co outscored the Wildcats 30-16 in the second half. For MV (7-7, 10-11), Andrew Holtz had 12 points. Avery Holtz made five assists.

     Against Springville Feb. 10, the Wildcats lost 48-30. Miguel Bojorquez led a balanced scoring attack with six points. Avery Holtz had five, whiel Andrew Holtz and Mitch Heims had four points each. Avery Holtz also made five assists.
