Wildcats sweep quadrangular meet

     Maquoketa Valley scored a sweep of a quadrangular meet Thursday, Dec. 7 at North Linn in Troy Mills.

     The Wildcats defeated Central City 60-12, North Linn 48-28, and Edgewood-Colesburg 45-34.

     Going 3-0 for the night were Robert Hildebrand, with three pins; Chance Downs, Mitch Smith, Cole Kruse and Michael Feldmann. Dylan Happel was 2-0.

     On Saturday, Dec. 9, MV sent three wrestlers to the Aplington-Parkersburg tournament. Two of them, Downs and Smith, took third place in their weight classes.

     “To place two out of our three guys in the top three of this very competitive tournament was a good feat,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said. “There were numerous state medal winners from last year at a lot of the weights, so to accomplish this shows we are moving in the right direction.”

 

Girls basketball

     Sam Wall scored 18 points and Maci Freiburger came off the bench to add 12 in a 60-24 Wildcat home win over Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 1. Wall shot 7-for-11 from the field. Payton Ries added eight points. Freiburger had six rebounds. Maddy Anderegg made seven steals. Ella Imler and Wall had four assists apiece.

     “I was pleased with how active we were on the defensive end in this game,” Maquoketa Valley coach Scot Moenck said. “Probably the thing I was most pleased with was the fact that we had nine different kids score in this game.”

     On Dec. 5, MV traveled to Central City and scored a 53-23 win. Maquoketa Valley led 24-4 after one quarter, 43-8 at halftime. Three MV players scored in double figures: Ries with 14, Gracie Gellersen with 11 and Wall with 10. Lydia Helle and Freiburger had seven rebounds apiece. Wall made seven assists. Getting three steals apiece were Emerson Whittenbaugh, Anderegg, Ries and Gellersen.

 

Boys basketball

     MV lost a Tri-Rivers Conference, West Division game at Central City Dec. 5, by a score of 57-49. Three Maquoketa Valley players scored in double figures: Brock Hillers and Tyson Tucker with 11 points apiece, and Heath Gibbs with 10. Tucker completed a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. Heath Gibbs had seven points and 10 rebounds.
