Baseball

Maquoketa Valley won three of four baseball games in recent Tri-Rivers Conference action.

The Wildcats (11-7, 13-10) played at Alburnett June 15, and split a doubleheader, losing 10-2 and winning 1-0. MV was held to three hits in the first game, singles by Zak Harbach, Norm Wilson and Trevor Elgin. Brock Hillers had two stolen bases.

In the second game, Cole Willenbring pitched a three-hit shutout, with two strikeouts and no walks. Tyson Tucker drove in Harbach with the game’s only run, in the first inning.

On June 19, Maquoketa Valley swept a home doubleheader against Central City, wining 2-0 and 4-1. Norm Wilson pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game, striking out six. Clint Krapfl and Norm Wilson both batted 2-for-3. Kyle Wilson and Tucker had doubles.

A three-run fourth inning was key to the second game win. Trevor Elgin pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine, and was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Softball

It was a six-game week for the Maquoketa Valley softball team, which went 1-5.

Maquoketa Valley (8-7, 17-16) split a doubleheader at home against Central City on June 19, losing 3-0 and winning 5-4. Ali Sheehy pitched the first game, and took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on eight hits and striking out four. Maddie Lahr had the team’s only hit.

MV came back in the second game, as Payton Ries hit a walkoff single to score Macy Hoeger and Brianna Mensen in the bottom of the seventh. Abby Holtz got the win, giving up seven hits, striking out three and walking none. Hoeger finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Payton Ries was 2-for-4. Rejji Smith had two stolen bases.

On June 20, the Wildcats continued a home doubleheader against Center Point-Urbana that had been suspended after one inning on May 22. CP-U swept the twinbill, winning 4-1 and 6-3. Payton Ries and Maddy Anderegg had two hits apiece in the first game.

In the second game, MV had nine hits, but committed three errors, allowed six walks and left 10 runners on base. Payton Ries, Hoeger and Anderegg had two hits apiece.

“We hit the ball well in game two, but started too many things with one or two outs, and couldn’t get the timely hits to put the runs across the plate,” Maquoketa Valley coach Mike Mensen said.

Next, the Wildcats traveled to play Calamus-Wheatland June 22, losing by scores of 6-2 and 10-6. In the first game, Lea Ries, Mensen and Smith had two hits apiece. Holtz pitched and took the loss.

“Abby has done what we have asked of her, and that is to throw strikes,” coach Mensen said. “We just made a few too many mistakes against a good hitting team.”

MV trailed 9-0 in the second game before rallying. Cassie Westhoff bagged 3-for-4, while Maci Freiburger, Mensen and Lahr each had two of the team’s 11 hits. Sheehy was the starting pitcher, relieved by Freiburger in the third inning.

“Maci battled and got out of some tough situations against a good team,” the coach said. “This was a good learning experience for her and should boost her confidence.”
