Wildcats win two Tri-Rivers matches

Volleyball

     It was a big week for the Maquoketa Valley volleyball team last week, as the Wildcats won both of their Tri-Rivers Conference matches.

     MV (3-2, 10-10) scored a three-set sweep at Springville Sept. 29, winning 25-23, 25-19, 25-18. Emerson Whittenbaugh recorded 21 kills and Taya Tucker added 12 in the win, as Carissa Sabers made 32 assists. Defensively, the Wildcats totaled 86 digs, led by Ella Imler with 21, Whittenbaugh with 17, Payton Beaman with 13 and Avery Krapfl with 12. Tucker had three blocks, and Beaman had two.

     At home against Alburnett Oct. 1 for Senior Night, the Wildcats secured a 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 victory. Whittenbaugh had 18 kills and 19 digs in that match. Kennedy Rausch had 29 assists. Tucker had nine kills. Imler had 23 digs, and Krapfl had 12. Krapfl and Rausch both served 12-for-12. Tucker and Whittenbaugh had three blocks each.

 

Football

     Alburnett scored a fourth quarter touchdown that proved to be the difference, as Maquoketa Valley lost a 20-14 decision Oct. 2 in Alburnett.

     It was the third time this season the Wildcats (1-5) have lost by six points or fewer this year.

     MV did have some bright spots. Quarterback Parker Sternhagen rushed 23 times for 113 yards and a touchdown, and A.J. Ambundo also had a rushing touchdown.

     Defensively, Lucas Orcutt recovered two Alburnett fumbles, while Tony Offerman and Owen Mensen each made an interception.

 

Cross country

     Maquoketa Valley’s boys ran fifth in a competitive field of 20 teams at the Jesup Invitational cross country meet Sept. 29.

     MV totaled 156 points. Center Point-Urbana won the meet with 73, followed by Denver with 89, North Fayette Valley with 117 and Waverly-Shell Rock with 129.

     Cy Huber led the Wildcats individually, finishing fourth in 17:04.5. Nolan Ries was seventh in 17:19.0, Michael Schaul 29th in 18:05.0, Mitch Heims 50th in 18:53.4, Brock Trenkamp 76th in 19:23.7, Landin Frasher 79th in 19:31.9, and Toby Grimm 101st in 20:15.1.

     The Wildcats did not have any entries in the girls’ varsity race.
