Wildcats wrap up regular season

MAQUOKETA VALLEY RECAP

Maquoketa Valley followed a doubleheader sweep with a pair of losses, all in Tri-Rivers Conference play, to wrap up the regular season for softball. 

 

The Wildcats (11-13, 16-22) swept a home doubleheader against East Buchanan July 1, winning 7-6 and 19-9, the latter in five innings. The first game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Pirates holding leads of 1-0 and 4-3, and MV leading 2-1 and 6-4. East Buchanan tied the game 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning before the ‘Cats scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Brooke Elgin went 2-for-2 with a triple at the plate. Krista Ries was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. Rylie Aldrich was 2-for-4 with a double, and pitched for the win. She allowed eight hits and struck out three. 

 

MV won the second game thanks to six runs in the first inning, five in the fourth and six in the sixth. The Wildcats had 11 hits; Elgin was 3-for- 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Taya Tucker was 2-for- 3. Leah Ries and Krista Ries drove in three runs apiece. Shelby March stole two bases. Allie Knipper and Aldrich were the MV pitchers, with Knipper getting the win. 

 

Two days later, the Wildcats traveled to Lisbon for a July 3 doubleheader, losing by scores of 7-2 and 11-2. Lisbon took a 5-0 lead through three innings of the first game. MV had seven hits, includings doubles by Maddy Anderegg, Maddie Lahr and Elgin. Lahr drove in two runs. Tucker had two stolen bases. Aldrich pitched for the ‘Cats. 

 

In the second game, the Lions broke things open with a five-run third inning and three-run fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Maquoketa Valley again had seven hits. Elgin was 2-for-3 with a double, and Payton Beaman also was 2-for-3. Leah Ries and Lahr hit doubles. Knipper was the losing pitcher. 

 

Baseball 

Maquoketa Valley went 2-4 in recent Tri-Rivers Conference baseball action. 

 

The Wildcats (13-13, 13- 13) split a doubleheader at Edgewood-Colesburg June 26, losing 8-4 and winning 17-7. In the first game, Ed- Co’s five-run second inning was the difference. MV did have 11 hits from nine different players. Norm Wilson batted 2-for-3, and Parker Sternhagen was 2-for- 4. Blake Becker and Aspen Kraus doubled. Jon Seibert, Owen Mensen and Kraus were the MV pitchers, with Seibert taking the loss. 

 

MV led the second game 9-5 through four innings, then broke it open with five runs in the top of the fifth. A.J. Ambundo, Andrew Holtz and Becker each went 2-for-3. Ambundo and Seibert each drove in three runs, while Avery Holtz and Becker had two RBIs apiece. Wilson was 1-for-2 with five stolen bases. Becker and Andrew Holtz pitched; Becker was the winning pitcher. 

 

On July 1, Maquoketa Valley split a home doubleheader against East Buchanan, losing 9-3 and winning 15-1, the latter in five innings. MV had 11 hits in the opener, including two each from Andrew Holtz, Wilson and Mensen. Sternhagen and Wilson had doubles. Wilson pitched and took the loss. 

 

The ‘Cats mounted a 14-hit attack in the second game, led by Becker, who was 4-for-4 with two home runs and eight runs batted in. Ambundo was 3-for-3. Seibert and Wilson each had two hits and two RBIs. Sternhagen pitched a three-hitter and struck out three to get the win. 

 

At Lisbon July 3, the Wildcats lost 5-4 and 10-0, the latter in five innings. MV rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first game, but couldn’t catch up. Sternhagen and Wilson each had two of the team’s eight hits. Seibert pitched and took the loss. 

 

The Wildcats were held to one hit in the second game. Starting pitcher Andrew Holtz took the loss.
