Wildcats wrap up regular season

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley won two of its final three regular season girls basketball games in recent Tri-Rivers Conference action.

     The Wildcats (10-4, 17-4) played host to Alburnett Feb. 4 and pulled away in the second half to win 49-36. MV led 23-22 at halftime. Three Wildcats scored in double figures, including a double-double by Brooke Elgin, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ella Imler had 14 points, and Taya Tucker had 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Carissa Sabers added six points.

     At Starmont Feb. 7, MV rolled to a 24-4 first quarter lead, 42-7 at halftime, before winning 61-22. Emler had 22 points in that one, along with five assists. Tucker had 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Elgin had five points, five rebounds and two blocks.

     Maquoketa Valley then ended the regular season with a 51-42 loss at Springville, despite getting two double-doubles and three double-figure scorers. Tucker had 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Elgin recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds. Imler had 10 points and five rebounds.

 

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley saw its boys basketball regular season come to an end with a pair of road losses.

     The first of those came at Springville Feb. 11, a 69-37 defeat, as the host Orioles opened up a 33-10 halftime lead. For MV, Andrew Holtz scored 12 points, Avery Holtz added eight points, Mitch Heims had six points and five rebounds, and Miguel Bojorquez had five points. A.J. Ambundo also had five rebounds.

     On Feb. 14, the Wildcats (6-8, 9-12) lost 73-47 at Edgewood-Colesburg. Andrew Holtz led MV with 14 points, and Ambundo added 10. Scoring six points apiece were Mason Lubben and Owen Mensen, Bojorquez added five, and Devante Strickland had four.
