Wilson wins conference championship in Wilton

Despite missing the first half of the season due to injury, Panther freshman Wyatt Wilson wrestled his way to a River Valley Conference title at 126-pounds.
“Wyat had a great tournament,” Panther coach Ryan Luensman said. “We’re very excite for Wyatt and how he competed. He has already put his name into the history books and we are very proud of him.”
At the RVC Tournament on Jan. 31 in Wilton, Wilson went 3-0 to take first.
After a first-round bye, Wilson won by technical fall (19-2) over West Branch’s Liam Exline to move into the semifinals. After a 3-2 decision win over Alburnett’s Jaxson Port in the semifinals, Wilson pinned Wilton’s Troy McQuillen in 1:11 in the first-place match.
“Wyatt did a great job taking it one match a time and wrestling hard,” Luensman added. The RVC is a tough conference to win in.”
Parker Johnson went 2-1 on the day to finish third at 190 for the Panthers.
After a first-round bye, Johnson pinned Northeast’s Collin Burken in 5:42 to move into the semifinals.
Alburnett’s Wyatt Schrader won a 5-2 decision over Johnson in the semifinals, but the Panther senior bounced back with a pin (3:23) over Tipton’s Gabriel Costello to take third.
“Parker also had a solid tournament,” Luensman added. “This was a nice step forward for Parker. He wrestled hard and stayed in good position.”
Mace Schnoor went 3-2 on the day to finish sixth at 138 and Kaesyn Husmann and Ryker Hein also competed for the Panthers.
Monti finished eighth in the team standings, picking up 64.5 team points. Alburnett topped the 16-team event with 229 points. Wilton finished second with 189.5 points and West Liberty was third with 159.
