Wilton edges Wildcats in regionals

Softball

     Maquoketa Valley’s season came to an end with a 4-3 loss at Wilton in the Class 2A, Region 4 quarterfinals Wednesday, July 5.

     Wilton rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and one in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the win.

     “We had some opportunities, we just failed to get bunts down and made some fielding mistakes,” Maquoketa Valley coach Mike Mensen said.

     The Wildcats trailed 1-0 through three innings, but tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Rejji Smith.

     In the sixth, Maci Freiburger hit a two-run homer, also scoring Payton Ries, as MV took a 3-1 lead.

     Maquoketa Valley finished with seven hits. Macy Hoeger was 2-for-4. Alison Sheehy pitched the first six innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. Abby Holtz pitched the seventh inning and took the loss.

     The Wildcats finished the season with a record of 21-17, including 12-7 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

    

Baseball

     Two doubleheader splits and a single game win ended the regular season for the Maquoketa Valley baseball team.

     The Wildcats (13-9, 17-13) played a doubleheader at Bellevue Marquette June 29 in Tri-Rivers Conference action, and split the two games.

     MV won the first one 7-0 as Tyson Tucker pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts. He was backed by an offense that produced 12 hits. Tucker helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Norm Wilson was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Kyle Wilson also went 2-for-4. Zak Harback was 2-for-5 with two stolen bases.

     Marquette won the second game 8-5. MV had seven hits. Harbach was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Trevor Elgin went 2-for-4 and stole two bases. Cole Willenbring and Jon Seibert shared pitching duties.

     On July 3, the Wildcats split another doubleheader, this time at Lansing Kee. MV lost the first game 5-1, getting just five hits, including doubles by Clint Krapfl, Norm Wilson and Harbach. Starting pitcher Norm Wilson took the loss.

     Maquoketa Valley bounced back to edge Kee 1-0 in the second game, as Elgin pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. The ‘Cats were held to four hits, including a double by Krapfl. Willenbring drove in Krapfl with the game’s only run.

     The Wildcats had more strong pitching in their final regular season game, a 6-0 win over MFL MarMac July 6 in Delhi. Alec McDowell and Tucker combined on a one-hitter with 13 total strikeouts. Tucker pitched the last four innings, allowing no hits and striking out nine. Norm Wilson batted 2-for-2. Harbach stole two bases.

     MV was scheduled to open district play July 11 with a game against Edgewood-Colesburg, played in Troy Mills.
