Win in tourney highlights Cubs' week
Monticello won just one of its four semi-pro baseball games played last week, but it was probably the biggest one for the Cubs: a 1-0 shutout of Worthington in the first round of the Dyersville Tournament.
That win moved the Cubs into the tournament quarterfinals, and a scheduled July 31 meeting with Balltown. It also helped overshadow a week that included a 14-4 loss at Dyersville, and a pair of home losses on July 29; 5-0 to Farley and 8-6 to Dubuque. All three of those were in Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League play.
Monticello won the Worthington game in walkoff fashion. The teams played to a scoreless tie through 6 ½ innings, with Cubs pitcher Mason Newhard throwing a three-hit, five-strikeout gem.
“Mason pitched one heck of a game,” Monticello player/manager Garett Hanken said. “He kept us in it, and we were able to capitalize on a Worthington mistake to win it.”
In the bottom of the seventh, Zach Monk singled, went to second on a sacrifice attempt by Newhard that turned into an error, and scored on another Worthington error off the bat of Michael Reuter.
Newhard only three times allowed a runner as far as second base, but two of those were in the top of the seventh, when Worthington loaded the bases with one out. A popout to Michael Reuter at second and a strikeout ended the inning.
Michael Reuter had two of the Cubs’ five hits.
The league game at Dyersville “was ugly from the start and just got uglier as the game went on,” Hanken said.
Dyerville scored in every inning, closing it out in the bottom of the sixth with the 10-run rule. Monticello had six hits; Tanner Felton was 2-for-3.
Against Farley, in the first of two games on July 29, the Cubs were held to five hits, including a double by Tanner Felton. The teams were scoreless through six innings, but Farley scored five in the top of the seventh.
It was a tough loss for Cubs starter Tyler Felton, who allowed eight hits while pitching 6 2/3 innings, before being relieved by Gary Gilbert.
“Tyler did a great job through six innings,” Hanken said. “Our bats were pretty quiet in this one, and we didn’t give him much help.”
Things were looking good for the Cubs in the Dubuque game, also on Sunday. Monticello scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead, with Jacob Thompson, Tanner Felton, Ben Stutt, Jacob Manternach and Lucas Stutt each driving in a run.
But Dubuque answered with six runs in the top of the fourth, and led the rest of the way.
“We came out with better focus, but let it slip away,” Hanken said. “Tanner and Ben hit the ball well.”
Tanner Felton and Ben Stutt both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Thompson hit a double.
Following the Balltown game July 31 in Dyersville, the Cubs will play in the Holy Cross Tournament Aug. 4 at 1:30 p.m., against Worthington.
