Witnessing the gift of a medium

My column this week isn’t meant to sway anyone one way or another; but to share a unique experience I had over the weekend that I hope to take in again.

My aunt and uncle, who lost their older daughter in 1999 when she was 16 years old due to a car accident, have gone to see several mediums over the years in Iowa. For them, and no doubt many others who have lost loved ones, it’s a coping mechanism, a healing tool.

On Friday night, my mom and I accompanied my aunt and uncle to Dubuque to see a medium from Maquoketa. Mindie Adamos, who now resides on the East Coast, is a psychic medium and can connect to souls and spirits. This was the third time my aunt and uncle have gone to see her “in action” and each time they have been impressed. This was my first time witnessing a medium in person, and I came away wanting to see and hear more.

Many people are probably aware of a few well-known mediums: John Edward, Theresa Caputo, and Tyler Henry. Edward appears on news talk shows from time to time and also conducts large-scale readings across the country. Caputo has her own TV show, “Long Island Medium,” on TLC. Henry has his own show as well on the E! network, “Hollywood Medium.”

I’ll admit, some of what we see on TV, especially with Caputo and Henry, is edited for entertainment value. But when my aunt and uncle have gone to see Edward in person, their personal experience blew them away.

I tend to be a believer in the ability of a medium. I don’t consider it devilish work or against Christianity. It’s their gift. And, who doesn’t want some peace in life knowing those who have passed on did so without pain? Who doesn’t want to know that our loved ones are watching over us from heaven? Or that the sign we see everyday is a message from them?

With a room of a couple hundred people or so, Adamos reached over a dozen spirits connected to those in the audience. One in particular was a 13-year-old girl who passed away in 2016 from an ATV accident. This girl is the daughter of some family friends of ours.

Her parents were in the audience and simply wanted to know that their daughter felt no pain. Adamos brought up connections within this particular family that not everyone would know. Without going into their personal story, their daughter and her uncle were quite close in life, and Adamos picked up on that connection. She also mentioned the uncle’s daughter who says that she can see her, which the parents acknowledged.

There was another gal in the audience, who was there with several friends, who not only lost her mother, but lost twin babies as well due to an early delivery. Adamos picked up on that sand shared that the grandmother and twins were together in heaven. The emotion in the lady’s voice was enough to choke me up as well.

There were other connections Adamos made to many in the crowd Friday night that would be hard for the general population to know. Connections to specific pieces of jewelry; asking one woman if she had lost something of importance recently (her diamond earring); knowing special birthdays, anniversaries, and death dates; and knowing certain cities of importance to people.

As a believer, I do watch the TV shows featuring Caputo and Henry. I have seen Edward a time or two on different shows as well. Every time, I am blown away by their gifts and the peace and comfort they bring to so many people. It’s simply amazing!
