Workshop to address Palmer amaranth

Palmer amaranth, a new weed to Iowa and serious threat to production agriculture, has now been discovered in at least 48 Iowa counties.

Farmers, farmer advisers, and others interested in learning to identify and manage this new threat will want to attend an upcoming Palmer amaranth identification and management workshop at the Jones County Extension Office on Monday, Feb. 27 at 11:30 a.m.

The Jones County Extension Office is located in the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

This workshop will include a lunch and is free and open to the public. Workshop topics will include: Palmer amaranth identification, management in crop and CRP areas, and a discussion of common questions and concerns with Palmer amaranth. Please pre-register to the Jones County Extension Office at 319-465-3224 prior to the workshop.

“With Palmer amaranth discoveries quickly increasing across the state, proper identification is key to controlling infestations and preventing movement to crop fields. With early identification, eradication of this problem weed is still possible in many areas,” said Meaghan Anderson, Iowa State University Extension field agronomist.

For more information about these and other workshops, please contact Meaghan Anderson at mjanders@iastate.edu or 319-337-2145.
