     • The Great Jones County Fair announced country artist Blake Shelton would be performing at the 2012 fair on Friday, July 20. Toby Keith was previously announced as well for Saturday, July 21. (1/18/2012)

     • Haley Moore, a junior at MHS, got the chance to perform during the halftime show of the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 2 in Orlando, Fla. Moore is a member of the MHS Expressions Dance Team. She performed in front of 70,000 people. More was one of about 400 dancers who took part in the “Celebrate America” halftime performance. (1/11/2012)

 

10 years ago:

     • Incumbent Ron Newland will remain a member of the Monticello City Council following his win in a special election on Jan. 9. Newland, Ward 2, beat his opponent Bill Meyer, 132-70 votes. There was a 30 percent voter turnout. (1/17/2007)

     • Emily Burds, 12, of Monticello, is gearing up for a trip overseas to Italy, Malta, Sicily, and France. Burds, who is a representative with the People to People student ambassador program, has already been to England and France. She will travel with the student group this summer for a 20-day trip. As an ambassador, Burds will help promote world peace. Upon her return, she plans to give presentations to local groups about her travels. (1/17/2007)

 

25 years ago:

     • The John McDonald facility will soon be fully occupied again. Officials with St. Luke’s Hospital and Kirkwood Community College announced plans for a joint health and education program in the former hospital. Both entities will jointly own the building. The goal of the new partnership is to improve access to healthcare and education programs in Monticello and Jones County.

     The college will occupy 8,000 square feet on the third floor. This will give Kirkwood 45 percent more space than they had in their building on Plastic Lane. John McDonald will continue to house healthcare services on the first floor. (1/15/1992)

     • Louis Morf, owner of Photo Images, has purchased County Theater from Sue and Andy Ballou. Morf said he intends to move Photo Images into County Theater. Both businesses will retain their respective names. Pam Goettsch is managing the combined businesses. The Ballous are moving onto a new venue, Recycled Products. (1/15/1992)

 

50 years ago:

     • William H. Stuhler, owner of Stuhler’s in Monticello, will be a featured model in a style show reflecting “The male look of 1967” at the convention of the Menswear Retailers of America in Chicago. The show will emphasize the new fabrics and the interest in coordinated leisure wear including accessories recommended for all professions, businesses, spectator and participating sports. 100 years ago:

     • T.F. Denkhoff, a local jeweler, has recently installed a new safe in his store. It is designed so that it will contain all of the trays of jewelry, and in addition has within it a burglarproof safe to hold high-priced jewels and money. (1/18/1917)

     • The stakeholders of the Jones County Fair Association met in the lecture room of the public library and elected directors: G.P. Rockstad, E.G. Hicks, A.J. Stuhler, W.A. Beery, V.C. Hanssen, R.H. George, A.M. Maurice, C.A. Doxsee, and M.V. Kehoe. The dates for the fair this year will be Aug. 27-31. These dates were settled upon by the Fair Association last November. (1/18/1917)
