75 years ago:

   • Effective the first of January, 1948, the name of the Farmers Lumber and Supply Company was changed to the Great Plains Supply Co. It was felt this change would be desirable because the former name was often confused with names of other firms in this area whose names were similar. As soon as weather conditions permit, construction work will begin on the new, modern building which the company is planning to erect on the lots just west of the Milwaukee railroad tracks across the street from the monument works.  (1/29/1948)

   • The Monticello Conservation League and Gun Club has held four fox hunts the past winter. The men killed 17 foxes. The proceeds from the hides and the bounties will be used for a supper for the fox hunters.  (1/29/1948)

100 years ago:

   • W.R. Kuhns of Monticello is the owner of three apples, which are more than 62 years old and still in an excellent state of preservation. The apples were brought by Mr. Kuhns’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Kuhns, to Iowa from Pennsylvania in 1860. The apples are stuck with cloves and look nearly as sound as the day they were picked from the tree 62 years ago. Who can beat this record?  (1/25/1923)
