5 years ago:

     • After officially announcing her presidential candidacy on April 12, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made her first official stop in Monticello on April 14. Clinton held an educational roundtable at Kirkwood’s Jones Regional Education Center, visiting with students and educators about what they see as challenges in education. (4/22/2015)

10 years ago:

     • With its time of 3 minutes, 39.68 seconds Monticello’s 1,600-meter medley relay team qualified for the Drake Relays. The team of Dallas Koppes, Rob Jones, Mitch McLaughlin and Noah Williams took the 24th and final qualifying spot in that event, making Drake by .04 of as second. (4/21/2010)

25 years ago:

     • On March 1, work started on remodeling the former Dairy Mart building and on April 1, Great Pastimes opened for business. Great Pastimes offers a full selection of wine, liquor and beer, snacks and pop, and about 1,200 videos for rent. The business is owned by Kent and Cindy Behrends. (4/26/1995)

     •  The 1995 Monticello Athletic Banquet was held at Camp Courageous. More than 450 people attended the event, which was highlighted by the presence of the Hall of Fame Award recipients and the student awards. Gertrude Mullen, Mitzi Bohlken, Mark Roussell, Ronnie Long and Gordon Westhoff were inducted into the esteemed Hall of Fame. (4/26/1995)

50 years ago:

     • A “This is Your Life” type program will mark Boyd Shannon Day activities Sunday, April 26, in Monticello. The special event honors the retiring superintendent of the Monticello Community schools. A series of awards will be given to Shannon, who has served the Monticello schools for 40 years, the past 26 as superintendent. (4/23/1970)

     • Polo Plastics constructed a building in Monticello last year located in the industrial park at the north edge of Monticello. Production started last fall and the plant is now operating at 15 percent of its intended goal. Interior construction is still underway. (4/23/1970)

100 years ago:

     • The high school wireless is now in working order. Mr. Cross picked up messages last Friday and Saturday, but could not read them. From the wave length he thought they came from somewhere on the Great Lakes. The wireless is a fine thing for this school. The wireless club now consists of about thirty members. (4/22/1920)

     • The basket ball [sic] banquet was held last Friday evening in the dining room of the domestic science department of the Monticello public schools. The room was tastefully decorated for the occasion with yellow flowers. The banquet was prepared by the girls of the senior domestic science class. After a five course banquet, the basket ball [sic]  team upon ballot choose Burton McLaughlin as captain of the team for 1920-21. (4/22/1920)
