Years Gone By

5 years ago:

     • Maquoketa Valley third-grader Kaitlyn Nolan found $2 on the Johnston Elementary playground in Hopkinton. She decided to donate her find to Maquoketa Valley’s Dollars for Scholars. Upon hearing how generous and giving Nolan was, each Dollars for Scholars board member donated as well and the fund has now grown to $528. DFS is calling this scholarship “The Ripple Effect.” (4/29/2015)

10 years ago:

     • Monticello’s sprint relay team of Dallas Koppes, Mitch McLaughlin, Rob Jones and Noah Williams came into the Drake Relays seeded 24th, and ran 18th overall, in a season-best time of 3 minutes, 38.5 seconds. (4/28/2010)

30 years ago:

     • The Monticello High School golf teams continue to be on hot streaks. Both the boys and the girls won two meets last week. This gives the girls a 5-0 record and the boys a 4-0 mark. Rowdy Hall and Brian McDonald were meet medalists in Vinton with 39s. Dustin Hall shot a 43, followed by J.J. Picray (48), Pete Meier (49) and Scott Burrichter (53). (4/25/1990)

50 years ago:

     • Plans for major improvements at the Great Jones County fairgrounds are being announced by Larry Robertson, fair manager. A solid, metal roof will be installed over the permanent seating section of the amphitheater. The new roof will replace the existing framework and canvas cover which protects only part of the amphitheater. (4/30/1970)

     • Parents of children, ages 1 to 12 years, are reminded of the rubella clinic to be held Monday in Jones county. County residents have been asked to “help rub out rubella” by having their children vaccinated and by contributing to the rubella fund drive. (4/30/1970)

100 years ago:

     • No. 28 running between Calmar and Monticello and commonly known as the “jitney,” broke down last Saturday and the passengers were brought to Monticello in a caboose. The jitney was repaired and reached Monticello at one o’clock. (4/29/1920)

     • Civil War veterans will be interested in a pension bill which passed the senate on last Friday. The bill provides for the increasing of pensions of the civil war veterans to $50 monthly, and the widows of  the veterans to $30 monthly. (4/29/1920)
