     • The Jones County Sheriff’s Office filed charged in connection with several burglaries that occurred on Nov. 14, 2011. Jonathan Martin, 28, of Waterloo, was charged with three counts of 3rd degree burglary and three counts of criminal mischief. Martin attempted to enter four businesses in Jones County: two pharmacies, a bar, and a convenience store. Delaware, Linn, and Johnson counties were also hit that same day.

     While investigating a burglary at The Grove Bar & Grill, blood was found at the scene. DNA analysis traced the blood belonging to Martin. (2/8/2012)

     • Landon Felton and Cameron Paddoack qualified for district competition during the Class 2A wrestling sectional tournament. Felton made school history with a record of 37-6, winning the championship of the 113-pound division. In the process he surpassed the career 150-win mark. He has 151 wins, tied with his brother Logan Felton, for the most in school history.

     Paddock, 22-8, was a runner-up finisher in the 285-pound division. (2/8/2012)

 

10 years ago:

     • Chiropractors Emily Recker and Sheila McGreal are adjusting well to their new digs at 216 N. Main St. The space for Family Chiropractic is three times their previous location. They have a larger lobby area, three adjustment rooms, an acupuncture room and a therapy bay room. There is also an X-ray room and separate office space for Recker and McGreal.

     Family Chiropractic originally opened in October 2001. They opened in their new location on Dec. 11, 2006. (2/14/2007)

     • After nearly 20 years, the Kitty Creek Quartet are calling it quits so its members can enjoy retirement. Members are: Dale Heeren, Arlon Duit, Duane Mesch, and Jim Holmes. You can tell from watching them perform that it’s four best friends having the time of their lives.

     The group’s final performance will be Feb. 17 at the Jones County Dairy Banquet. Holmes and Mesch graduated together from Monticello High School in 1959. They were part of the Monticello Men’s Chorus. The quartet’s name stems from a local creek that tends to flood every year. They’ve performed over 75 times together and released seven albums/CDs. 25 years ago:

     • Representatives with the Iowa DOT met with about 100 county residents on Feb. 4 to offer information and answer questions about the proposed U.S. Highway 151 bypass. Construction is expected to begin late 1997/early 1998. The exact route should be released by the summer of 1993. Two Monticello exits are planned: one south of the city and one southeast of town, intersecting with Highway 38. A northern exit is not in the works right now. (2/12/1992)

 

50 years ago:

     • No injuries were reported in a car versus school bus collision at 4:20 p.m. Feb. 7 on Buffalo Road. The car was driven by Mrs. Lois Codar, 25, of Anamosa. The bus belongs to the Anamosa School District. The driver was Arthur Keister, 60. The only remaining passengers were two young boys. The collision occurred on the curve of a snow-covered gravel road. (2/9/1967)

 

100 years ago:

     • A representative from Ringling Bros. Circus was in Monticello last Friday and purchased a Scotch Collie dog from Tom Shover. Mr. Shover makes a specialty of fine dogs. (2/8/1917)

     • The Monticello Fire Department was called out last Monday night to take care of a fire at the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul roundhouse. A barrel of oil accidentally caught fire, but the fire was extinguished before the department arrived on scene. This was the first time that the new fire bell was used. (2/8/1917)
