     • The Panther boys track team finished second as a team and qualified 11 entries in nine events for the State Track and Field Meet to be held May 21-23 in Des Moines. Monticello athletes headed to State are Zak Holmes (alternate), Jordan Loes, Matt Manternach, Kody Goettsch, Trent Aitchison, Justin Dirks. Derek Manternach, Noah Steiner, Garrett Rieniets, Jayson Blunt, DeArzae Fasnacht and Jarrett Easton. (5/20/2015)

     • The Panther girls track team qualified for state in six events – four individual events and two relays. Headed to Des Moines are Becca Burmahl, Calli McQuillen, Mandi Miles, Jazmine Reynolds, Rachel Gadient, Ellen Schlarmann, Paige Holub, Jordyn Patterson, Rachel Larabee, Natalie Newhard and alternates Shalay Bronemann, Rileigh Lambert and Meredith Melchert. 10 years ago:

     • When last year’s National Business Professionals of American Conference was delayed for a month due to an H1N1 scare, it kept Monticello High School students from participating. The Monticello entries made up for that this year at the conference in Anaheim, Calif. Students who received medals at the National BPA Convention were Dillon Stockman, Scotty Hall, Josh Beal and Austin Merfeld. (5/19/2010)

25 years ago:

     • The 8th Annual Cruisin’ for Camp Courageous will be held Sunday, May 21 at the camp. There will be five categories of autos. The arts and craft show will be held inside the multi-purpose building and outside under the canopies of the lodges. A dance will be held the evening before on the blacktop at the Blue Chip. 50 years ago:

     • Monticello High School will hold commencement on Wednesday, May 27 in the gym. MHS will graduate 124 students. Dr. Samuel E. Stumpf, president of Cornell College will be the speaker. The high school concert band, under the direction of Ray Stumbaugh, will play selections preceding the exercise. The concert choir, under the direction of William Day, will provide special music. Jim Bone, president of the class of 1970, will give the senior address. (5/21/1970)

     • The Charades, a Monticello Community high school vocal group, will present a concert at the band shelter, near the swimming pool, May 29. The Charades, a high school swing choir, originated four years ago. The concert will include pop music, solos and special choreography. (5/21/1970)

100 years ago:

     • The pupils of the Monticello High School held a mock election for president of the United States, last Tuesday. Governor Lowden of Illinois won by one vote. The girls’ and boys’ ballots were kept separate. Five ballots were spoiled, making the vote 125. Of this number the republicans polled 121 votes and the democrats 4. (5/20/1920)

     • The Monticello public schools will hold its annual commencement exercises, May 23rd to May 27th inclusive. The week’s events include: Baccalaureate at the Methodist Episcopal church, class play at the Opera House, Class Day in the high school assembly room, and commencement at the Opera House. Sixteen students are graduates of the college preparatory course and six students of the normal training course. (5/20/1920)
