     • The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship released a statement ordering the cancellation of all live bird exhibitions at county fairs due to avian influenza. The Great Jones County Fair and ISU Extension are exploring alternate learning opportunities offer 4-H members who will not be able to show their poultry projects at this year’s fair. (5/28/2015)

     • The Monticello High School boys 4x800-meter relay team finished first at the state meet setting a new state meet record. The state champion relay team is Matt Manternach, Derek Manternach, Jordan Loes and Jarrett Easton. (5/28/2015)

10 years ago:

     • Deb Bowman is retiring as teacher and speech and theatre advisor for Monticello High School after 30 years with the district. Bowman has directed more than 60 plays, instructed more than 4,000 students and attended at least 100 speech contests in her career. (5/19/2010)

25 years ago:

     • More than 500 people attended the 100th Monticello Alumni Banquet on May 27. Among them were 33 members of the Monticello High School and Sacred Heart classes of 1945. The Class of 1945 has the distinction of being the only class to have been in high school during all four years of World War II. (5/31/1995)

50 years ago:

     • Ernie Appleby of Monticello and his three youngsters, Trisha, Tammy and Tim picked 23 pounds of morel mushrooms in just one outing near here. Their crop took first place in the “quantity” division of the mushroom contest held at the Youth Center on Sunday. Second was Glenn Gabriel with 11 pounds. (5/28/1970)

100 years ago:

     • All members of the G.A.R. soldiers and sailors of the World War will meet in the high school gymnasium next Sunday morning at 9:30 o’clock., preparatory to attending the Memorial Day services to be held in the opera house commencing at ten o’clock. It is requested that all wear their uniforms if possible, but let no one stay away if for any reason a uniform is not available. (5/27/1920)

     • The automobile truck parades struck Monticello last week. The first parade was that of a number of automobile trucks driven by Dubuque dealers. There were six or seven trucks of standard makes. The principal speaker was B.H. Dawson of Des Moines, editor of a monthly publication devoted to trucks and truck transportation. He spoke in a practical way concerning the use of trucks on the farm, and showed how they might make the farmer independent of railroad indifference with properly paved highways. (5/27/1920)
