• After eight months of meetings and a special election, the City of Center Junction is no more. On June 10, the City Development Board in Des Moines voted unanimously to discontinue Center Junction. The town is now unincorporated, and is absorbed as part of Jones County. (6/17/2015)
• Jaycees/Kleinow field has a new addition. A pair of giant wooden bats and two oversized baseballs have been placed in front to greet players and spectators. Bud Johnson was behind the project. (6/17/2015)
10 years ago:
• The Great Jones County Fair held its annual kick-off event. The only change was the location. With the addition of a brand new stage on the fairgrounds, the party was held on the stage for all to enjoy. (6/16/2010)
20 years ago:
• Kids flocked to the pool on June 7 for the Kickoff party, which officially began the fundraising portion of the Monticello Family Aquatic Center capital campaign. The Make Waves campaign announced the winners of its poster contest. The first place winner in every class got a “Make Waves” t-shirt and a special “early swim” certificate. The certificate will give the students a chance to be among the first to use the new family aquatic center when it opens in the summer of 2001. (6/14/2000)
50 years ago:
• A new landfill site was among the items of business discussed by the city council Tuesday night. The old railroad excavation site north of Monticello has been selected as the most ideal site for a new landfill. (6/18/1970)
100 years ago:
• Through the efforts of a committee appointed at the last meeting of the Monticello Improvement Club, a fund has been secured to provide for weekly band concerts to be given in Monticello once a week throughout the summer. The concerts will be held Wednesday evenings, commencing at 8 o’clock. (6/17/1920)
• The ice house will be open on Sundays between the hours of 8 and 10 a.m. and no longer. Persons desiring to get ice on Sunday must call between the above named hours if they desire to get their wants supplied. (6/17/1920)
