Years Gone By

15 years ago:

     • Students in Deb Bowman’s Oral Communications class are collecting money this week to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Collection containers will be placed at businesses around town while some students will stand at street corners and others will go door-to-door. Another group of students will be collecting stuffed animals at the high school to be sent south. (9/7/2005)

     • A new team will begin play in Monticello, a tackle football team for grades 5-6. It’s a chance for Monticello to begin teaching varsity methods at an early age. The team, coached by Steve Holmes, will open its season Sept. 11 at Independence. There are two home games at Dean Nelson Field. (9/7/2005)

25 years ago:

     • Tours were given, speeches were made and a ribbon was cut, signifying the official opening of the new 44,000-square-foot plant and offices of Yeoman and Company. An appearance by Gov. Terry Branstad highlighted the afternoon, which included an open house and tours of the plant. (9/13/1995)

50 years ago:

     • The rough and rugged WaMaC football conference shows signs of being just as wild as always this fall, if you can believe the predictions of the league’s coaches. The Panthers should have good speed, experience and depth in their backfield. Coach Nelson’s gridders do it with magic or mirrors, but Monticello’s “hurting handful” have usually finished at or near the conference top nine years in ten. (9/10/1970)

75 years ago:

     • The annual Wyoming horse show was held last week. Over 100 head of horses were on hand for the competition. Classes included draft and matched teams. (9/13/1945)

     • Sacred Heart school opened Tuesday with an enrollment of 154 pupils, 47 of them in high school. Little Betty Holmes broke her finger while playing ball Tuesday. Wayne Wolf and little Anne Hayes have been absent all week due to illness. (9/13/1945)

100 years ago:

     • The hunting season for squirrels began September 1st, and a number of local hunters have visions of squirrel potpies. The game seems to be scarce due to the depletion of the stock last year. Some hunters are under the impression that prairie chickens can be killed this fall. The season on them does not open until 1922. The duck season opens the 15th of September. (9/9/1920)

     • The macadamized road leading east out of Monticello is getting in a roughened condition, because of the holes that have been worn in it. The lack of repair in time will shortly result in the necessity for expensive repairing. This being on the primary road system the local authorities disclaim any responsibility for the neglect.
