20 years ago:

     • Those traveling near the pond at Walnut Acres Campground on Friday had the chance for a rare sight: a pair of trumpeter swans. While it’s not as unusual to see the swans as it used to be, it is still uncommon, according to Michele Olson, naturalist the Jones County Nature Center.  (11/29/2000)

     • Camp Courageous’s new indoor pool is now a reality. An open house will be held on Saturday at the site of the new pool.  (11/29/2000)

50 years ago:

     • A 1971 Mercury Comet will be awarded by the Greater Monticello Committee in a special drawing Dec. 23. It will be the last of four such holiday events. Trade certificates will be given at the first three drawings.  (11/26/1970)

75 years ago:

     • A new type walk-through dairy barn has nearly been completed as the project of the Farm Mechanics class of the public high school. Designing and building a small-unit dairy barn was set as the semester project of the class of 11 boys by Vocational Agriculture Instructor A.F. Walker. A plan was submitted by each student and the boys selected that of Paul Rieniets as the best. (11/22/1945)

     • Postmen this week delivered to 500 Monticello homes an invitation to participate in the purchase and use of Christmas Seals. The Jones county goal has been set at $2,826, based upon the amount needed by the County Tuberculosis Association to carry out its 1946 health program. Funds from the sale finance work to discover cases of tuberculosis before they have advanced to a stage where treatment is futile, to help in the rehabilitation of patients and to inform the public about the disease and its prevention. At the present time there are six Jones county people under treatment in sanatoriums. (11/22/1945)

100 years ago:

     • The junior and sophomore party staged in the the high school gymnasium last Friday night, was a success from every angle. The gymnasium was decorated in the colors of the two classes. The fore part of the evening was spent in playing games. “Bring Back What You Borrow” called forth the most merriment. Later the waiters and waitresses donned in white frocks and white college caps, served a delicious two course luncheon. (11/25/1920)

     • Columbia academy of Dubuque, came to Monticello, last Friday, with the idea that the Monticello eleven wouldn’t be hard to beat, but they went away with the idea reversed. The day was just right for a game, so the excuse about it being too cold couldn’t be worked. A big crowd turned out for the last game of the season. The season has been unusually successful, Monticello having been beaten only once, and at that time by Manchester. The basket ball season will be next on the program. (11/25/1920)
