     • The tenth editor of  The Monticello Express, Wilbur (Bill) Doxsee, of Stevens Point, Wis. recently passed away at the age of 94. Doxsee stems from a long line of Doxsee men who ran the Express in its infancy.  (2/10/2016)

     • Three Monticello Panthers qualified for the district wrestling tournament during the sectional tourney Feb. 6 in Cascade. They were Chase Luensman, champion at 106 pounds, Zach Timm, runner-up at 285 and Lake Stahlberg, champion at 182.  (2/10/2016)

10 years ago:

     • Richland Road outside Monticello was blown shut after almost a foot of snow fell overnight on Feb. 1 and 2. Drifts along Welter Drive leading to Kirkwood and Yogi’s Inc. made it almost impossible to plow. Schools were canceled for two days with a late start on Friday.  (2/9/2011)

     • Did you know roller derby is alive and well and practiced in Monticello? The Eastern Iowa Outlaws, a women’s roller derby team that is based in Dubuque, practices at the Monticello Berndes Center. On Jan. 21, the team held a “Skate with the Outlaws” event for children in which the players gave out autographs, held a limbo contest and taught roller skating techniques to the youngsters in attendance.  (2/9/2011)

20 years ago:

     • Katie Tackett of Monticello is a normal 14-year-old, eighth grade student at Monticello Middle School. What is unusual about her right now though, is that a piece of artwork she drew is featured in the March issue of Seventeen magazine. She submitted the drawing of a young girl in November. 50 years ago:

     •. The Country Shindig, a country and western music group, will appear at the Youth Center in Monticello Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. The group is being brought here by the Monticello Jaycees.  (2/11/1971)

     • Nick Strittmatter, 6’3” Monticello senior, basketball player, leads the WaMaC conference in both individual scoring and individual rebounding. The Monticello varsity squad holds the number three WaMaC spot with a record of seven wins and four losses.  (2/4/1971)

75 years ago:

     • Eighteen Monticello veterans are among the 66 Jones County men who have been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action overseas. (2/14/1946)

     • Grover C. Miehe, Maynard, is the newly appointed assistant county extension director in Jones County. He will be in charge of 4-H club work and assist in planning the county farm program. (2/14/1946)

100 years ago:

     • James D. Skelley completed this week his annual ice harvest, and has secured enough ice to meet the demands of his customers for 1921. (2/11/1921)

     • Clarence R. Coon sold his jewelry stock to Karl M. Keyes of Freeport, Ill. Mr. Keyes is a graduate optometrist as well as a jeweler. (2/11/1921)
