     • The attention Spencer Williams received for his backboard shattering dunk April 8 was almost as surprising as the dunk itself. The Coe College sophomore received brief, nationwide fame when he and a Coe basketball teammate recorded a trick shot that resulted in flying glass. The video caught the attention of ESPN.  (4/20/2016)

15 years ago:

     • Visitors to Oakwood Cemetery can see a new sculpture at the crematorium in the cemetery’s northeast corner. The sculpture, which evokes images of fire, represents purification, said sculptor Ted Schuster. Schuster is owner of Prairie Forge Studio in rural Hopkinton, whom Monticello Cemetery Board officials commissioned to create the sculpture.  (4/19/2006)

20 years ago:

     • A cold, windy afternoon didn’t stop a large and enthusiastic crowd from coming out to support the Monticello High School boys soccer team as it played its first-ever game April 10 at home against Western Dubuque. “We had a nice crowd. They were very supportive and enthusiastic about the beginning of the sport.” said coach Tony Amsler. (4/18/2001)

50 years ago:

     • The Monticello girls track team topped Ed-Co and N. Linn Thursday on the home field. The Pantherettes totaled 84 points. In addition to marking their first win of the season, the team set three new school records. (4/22/1971)

     • A dance will be held Saturday, April 24 at the Youth Center in Monticello. A new local group, The Ivy Pillar, will play from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Admission is $1.50. (4/22/1971)

75 years ago:

     • An X-ray conference will be held April 25 at Mercy Hospital, Anamosa and John McDonald Hospital, Monticello. This is the conclusion of the current search for tuberculosis cases. The present search is the seventh one to be held in Jones County. Local Christmas seal funds had a part in meeting the costs in this promotion. (4/18/1946)

100 years ago:

     • Fritz Hein announced that the new Simplex motion picture machine, which he will use in the opera house after May 1, is now on display in the J.J. Hayes furniture store. The machine is of the latest type, and is being used in all the best theatres. It is a machine which produces flickerless pictures. Mr. Hein will soon show Tom Mix, William Farnam and many other Fox motion picture stars. All of his pictures will be 1921 releases. (4/21/1921)
