Years Gone By

• Mother-daughter duo Teresa Tobiason and Bailey (Gray) Bottelman opened Fancy Fritter Bakery & Eatery in mid-December. They wanted to provide the community with another dining option. The two said it’s fun to go into business together. They offer fresh, homemade baked goods, coffee, home-cooked lunch specials, and decorated cakes for special occasions. (1/28/2015)

• The Monticello Fire Department was one of 10 departments called to an early morning blaze on Jan. 23 at the Prairie Moon Ballroom in Prairieburg. The fire was reported at about 5 a.m., with the MFD and Anamosa department called at about 6 a.m. to assist. Owners Pete and Jan Novak aren’t sure if they’ll rebuild. The Ballroom holds fond memories for the MFD because they held their annual dance in Prairieburg for many years. Many of the Monticello firefighters have great memories of times spent at Prairie Moon. (1/25/1995)

• Plans for a new community project are being announced. A Monticello Hall of Fame is being established to honor outstanding persons in the area. Photos and a biography sketch of each person named to the HOF will be hung permanently in the Community Building. Each honoree will receive a plaque to be presented by the Monticello Express. Residents are asked to nominate a person they feel is deserving of the honor. The HOF will serve as a testimonial to persons who have made outstanding contributions, often with little or no recognition. (1/22/1970)

• Debbie Streeper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Streeper, received two trophies at the annual Iowa Palomino Exhibitor Association banquet in Des Moines.
