Years Gone By

10 years ago:

     • On the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, members of the Monticello community, city leaders, county and city law enforcement and public safety officials came together at the Public Safety Building to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial. The project was two years n the making. A 21-foot steel beam, which is the foundation of the Memorial, was used as a parameter support beam at the World Trade Center.  (9/14/2011)

15 years ago:

     • A popular question this past summer has been centered on the possibility of mountain lions in Jones County. Rumors have it that a mountain lion has once again been spotted. In actuality it is possible. Over the past years mountain lion populations have been increasing across the United States. This expansion is said to be due to very low interest in trapping and restricted hunting of mountain lions out west.  (9/13/2006)

25 years ago:

     • Site preparation has begun at the future location of Kramer Funeral Home along Highway 38 South. Completion of the new facility, which is a satellite to the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, is expected in early March next year.  (9/11/1996)

50 years ago:

     • The Rev. William H. Kronen of Alberta, Canada has accepted the call to become pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, rual Monticello. He will be installed in a special service on Sunday, Sept. 12. Rev. Kronen and his wife Patricia have five children.  (9/9/1971)

75 years ago:

     • A $70,000 municipal juvenile recreation center will be built in Monticello as soon as conditions permit. Local voters Tuesday voted 4 to 1 in favor of a $40,000 bond issue to supplement $30,000 which has already been raised for the project. The project will be located at the “Y” between South Cedar Street and Highway 151 south of Monticello. (9/12/1946)

     • Lines of trucks filing across the scales at the Farmer Foods canning company this week have brought tons and tons of sweet corn to the plant and pushed canning workers to the limit in processing it. Ray Walton, plant manager, said that after a rather slow start, the peak production of 110 tons a day was reached Tuesday. He estimates that a total of 4,000 tons of corn will be canned before the pack ends the last of this month. This year’s crop comes from more than 100 growers. There are on the average of 35 men employed as pickers and 8 to 10 trucks being used to deliver the corn to Monticello. About 100 are employed at the canning factory, 60 percent of them being women. 100 years ago:

     • A.H. Koop, John Boss, Albert Egan and Bud Hauss will be among those who will take advantage of the special excursion rates of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad, to attend the ball game at Chicago on Saturday. (9/9/1921)
