October is National Principals Month. The Monticello Community School District and Sacred Heart Catholic School are fortunate to have four principals proudly serving the families and students of this community. For the next several weeks, the Express will spotlight each principal, thanking them for their dedication.

This school year marks Monticello High School Principal Joan Young’s 19th year serving as principal. She’s been working in education for a total of 31 years.

“I enjoy working with staff, students, and parents,” she said. “I enjoy seeing students make plans to transition after high school. I also enjoy watching students display their many talents in their classrooms and extra curricular activities.”

Young praised the employees of the MCSD, saying she works with “the greatest high school staff and the best administrative team.

“We have a great school system in a great community. I am thankful for all of the opportunities for students and staff,” continued Young.

Young has a growing family. She and her husband Rod have been married for 39 years. They have three sons, two grandsons, two granddaughters, and one grand-puppy.

Her interests include: gardening, traveling, and visiting friends and relatives.

Something about Young that others may not know is that she grew up on a dairy and hog farm in Western Iowa. She is one of 13 children in her family.
