Youth horticulture workshops planned

Youth horticulture workshops are continuing in Monticello for all students in grades 3-12.

Learn how to raise fresh produce without a big garden space. Your patio or deck will work. Any enrolled 4-H member can participate in the Horticulture/Garden project and exhibit at the fair in the 4-H Horticulture show. Enrolled 4-H members are also eligible to exhibit in the 4-H Horticulture show at the Iowa State Fair.

All workshops will be held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center, 800 N. Maple St., Monticello. Fees, which include all materials, are $10 for 4-H members, $15 for non-members.

Session 2, “Think Inside the Box, Container Gardening, will be Saturday, April 22, 9-11 a.m. (register by April 18). No need to dig up your back yard. Grow a beautiful garden (out of everyday materials) right outside your window. This Earth Day workshop will feature container gardening. Youth will go home with planted garden containers or herb gardens.

Session 3, “No Soil Required! The Future of Farming,” will be Wednesday, May 17, 3-5 p.m. (register by May 8). Get a firsthand look at the most cutting edge way to grow the food we eat: hydroponically. Through exploring how plants are grown without soil, participants will explore space agriculture and get a chance to build their own hydroponic garden bucket.
