A lopsided win and a narrow loss with a dramatic finish gave the Monticello High School boys basketball team a 1-1 week last week.

The Panthers (7-4, 10-5) traveled to North-Linn Tuesday, Jan. 21, for a non-conference game, and scored a 78-38 victory.

Monticello put on a remarkable first quarter performance against North-Linn, outscoring the Lynx 34-4. The Panthers rained three-pointers on their hosts, and got a number of steals and lay-ups to bolster their lead, before cruising to the victory.

“Obviously it was one of the best offensive quarters we’ve played all year,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said. “We moved the ball well and shot well from outside.”

Herman finished with 22 points, going 5-for-8 from three-point range. Derek Manternach scored 13 points, making all five of his shots including three from beyond the arc. Garrett Rieniets shot 4-for-5 and finished with 11 points, while Matt Manternach was 4-for-4 from the field and scored 10. Spencer Williams had seven points off the bench.

“Spencer continues to get better,” Lambert said. “It’s nice to have that third post we can bring in. He’s athletic, big, and can run the floor.”

In all, Monticello was 29-for-45 from the field (64.4 percent).

Cody Jamison, Matt Manternach and Rieniets grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Herman had six assists and four steals, and Matt Manternach had six assists as well. Williams blocked two shots.

Friday, Jan. 24 brought a tough 61-58 home loss to North Cedar, in a game in which the Panthers trailed most of the way but had chances to win at the end.

“I felt the kids battled,” Lambert said. “North Cedar is obviously a good team.”

North Cedar led 18-16 after the first quarter, and 33-25 at halftime. The Knights led by as many as nine before the Panthers battled back.

“Sawyer was in foul trouble, but the other guys really did a nice job. We outscored them with Sawyer on the bench for that stretch. Matt Manternach did a nice job handling the ball and handling their pressure.”

Matt Manternach scored from three-point range three times in the first 4 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Panthers took a 51-48 lead. North Cedar regained a 57-54 lead with 1:21 to play. Cody Jamison sank two free throws to cut the margin to one with 1:14 left. Then, after three consecutive time-outs by North Cedar, Herman stole the ball and was fouled. He made both free throws to put the Panthers ahead 58-57 with 31.3 seconds to play.

North Cedar’s Jayden Johnson scored with 15 seconds left to put the Knights ahead 59-58, and a Panther turnover gave North Cedar the ball again.

A foul sent Jacob Hay to the line for the Knights with 4.5 seconds left. Hay made both free throws to put his team ahead by three. The Panthers brought the ball into the front court and took a time-out with 4.5 seconds left, but a last-second three-point shot attempt was blocked by North Cedar’s Josh Kintzel.

“It’s another tough loss that hopefully will make us better in the postseason,” the coach said.

Five Panthers scored nine or more points. Matt Manternach finished with 16, Herman had 13, Rieniets had 11, while Derek Manternach and Jamison had nine apiece. Rieniets had 10 rebounds. Jamison made nine assists. Herman made five assists and four steals.

“We had very balanced scoring. It’s nice that everyone is capable of scoring,” Lambert said.

The Panthers were scheduled to play host to Cascade Jan. 28 and Wilton Jan. 31.
